Charles Bess
Charles E. Bess is an HP Fellow. The title of HP Fellow is awarded to the corporation’s most innovative thought leaders in recognition of their exceptional achievements. Currently, Charles is part of the HP Labs Services Research lab where his focus is on interfacing between HP Labs and HP Enterprise services, with the goal of timely delivery of practical innovation to HP’s clients.

Previously he was the owner of the global architecture capability that aligns HP’s architecture activities for clients with industry standards and methods. He has been the Chief Technologist for the HP Enterprise Services relationship with a number of large clients as well as the Chief Technologist of the EDS global application delivery organization. He was also the initial leader of EDS’ market facing application portfolio. Charles is a frequent contributor to the Next Big Thing blog (http://www.hp.com/go/tnbt) and coordinates its operation. He frequently publishes thought leadership articles outside HP through magazines and journals. He is also one of the co-chairs for HP’s global technical conference for 2010 and 2011.

Charles received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University and a master’s degree in business administration from Southern Methodist University. Charles is currently licensed as a professional engineer in the state of Texas and is a Distinguished certified architect by The Open Group. He is also a senior IEEE member. He is active in various advisory boards at Southern Methodist University where he acts as mentor and coach for MBA candidates. He also interfaces regularly with Purdue University’s Electrical Engineering school on technology direction. He is on the executive board of the US-FIRST robotics competition in North Texas coordinating judging for the FIRST robotics competition and participates at the global competition as well.
